Mongolia -> Erdenet
Erdenet
Orhon Aymag

In the autonomous province of Orkhon sits Erdenet, the 2nd largest city in Mongolia, and a remaining piece of Russia. The reason for the Russian occupation is the copper mine that employs about 8,000 people and is the economic engine of the city. The city itself is fairly modern due to its prosperity and is very Russian. You will hear Russian spoken on the streets along with Russian foods in place of Mongolian ones. Though the mine was only discovered in the 1940s, there is evidence showing that Mongolians were making copper pots at least 200 years ago. A train line was built in 1977 connecting the city with Ulaanbaatar to transport the copper ore. The mine accounts for about 40% of Mongolia's hard-currency earnings and consumes 50% of the country's electricity.
