Mongolia -> ULAANBAATAR -> Kharkhorin-Karakorum
Kharkhorin-Karakorum    ULAANBAATAR, Ulaanbaatar Capital District

Kharkhorin lies about 230mi southwest of Ulaanbaatar and was the former Mongol capital under Chinggis Khaan. The city became the cultural, economic, and political capital in 1220, but only lasted 40 years before it was moved by Kublai Khaan to present-day Beijing. After the capital's move and the following collapse of the Mongol empire, Kharkhorin was demolished by Manchurian soldiers in 1388. In the 16th century, the remains were used to build Erdene Zuu Khiid, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. There isn't much left in the sleepy town but its prominent history and the monastery attract visitors. There is an effort to move the capital from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin between 2020 and 2030 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Chinggis' same actions in 1220.
