Mongolia -> ULAANBAATAR -> Manzushir Khiid Manzushir Khiid ULAANBAATAR, Ulaanbaatar Capital District Manzushir Khiid, pronounced 'Manshir', was built in 1733 and was once the home to 350 monks and 20 temples. Unfortunately, it did not escape the Russian purges of 1937 and was reduced to rubble. The main temple, however, has been restored as a museum but the main reason people come here is for its beautiful surroundings. Most of the area around the monastery is part of the Bogdkhan Uul Strictly Protected Area where the abundant wildlife can roam free among the streams and cedar trees. In the 19th century, an impressive 2,000 monks stood guard on the mountain against poachers. An interesting sight is the two-ton bronze cauldron built in 1726 and designed to boil up to 10 sheep at a time. |
